“But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine.”

– Daniel 1:8 NIV

Choosing to deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Jesus is not easy, but it has its benefits. Faith in Christ may not necessarily lead to an abundance of material wealth/possessions, social prestige and professional prominence, but none of those things can provide you access to God’s favor and help you to encounter an intimate, personal encounter with the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Daniel came from such a family background according to what we learn of him in the Old Testament book of Daniel. “Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility.” – Daniel 1:3 NIV

At the time we are introduced to Daniel, the Israelites are being invaded and overtaken by Babylonia. King Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of Babylonia, has chosen to select men of Israel from the royal family and of nobility to use them to influence the nation of Israel to serve King Nebuchadnezzar and convert to the ways of the Babylonians. Daniel, who fits the criteria, is one chosen by King Nebuchadnezzar’s officials to be trained to serve him. “Young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well-informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.” – Daniel 1:4 NIV For 3 years they were to undergo training to prepare them to serve King Nebuchadnezzar in his palace. They were assigned a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table during the time they would undergo this training for service under the authority of their new foreign ruler.

Like King Nebuchadnezzar, there are dark forces in this world and unseen spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms seeking to take the best of God’s men and women of faith and influence them to serve Satan, the ruler of this world. By the means and trappings of this world, it is the ploy of the enemy of our soul to deceive and dissuade us from seeking sincerely to serve our LORD and Master and succumb to the influence of what will gratify the desires of our flesh. Like Daniel, we must resolve within ourselves to remain steadfast, immovable and unshaken, even in the face what appears to threaten our well-being, so we may distinguish ourselves as members of the family of nobility of the kingdom of heaven. Doing so will cause us to encounter the extraordinary divine intervention of God’s grace and mercy to help us live the victorious spiritual life He has destined us to step into through faith in Christ. “Now God caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel.” – Daniel 1:9 NIV

May God bless you and help you to resolve within yourself to walk by faith so you may experience His authority and power that will help you to experience the fullness of life Christ came for us to have.
